Timo Bühler

Welcome to my digital home. . .

Currently I’m the Coordinator of the 'Environment and Climate Research Hub' at the University of Vienna. Since 2018 I'm also a lecturer for different topics at the Cooperative State University of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart and the Technical University in Vienna.

In 2021 I finished my Master's degree in Science-Technology-Society and subsequently worked as a researcher in the ICU4Covid project at the Department of Science and Technology Studies at the University of Vienna. Before all these things I finished my Bachelor degree in Business Information Management and worked four years at IBM in different job positions and countries.

I’m especially interested in the intersection of science, technology and society as well as in the topics environment, climate, education and algorithmic decision making.

Lecturer for 'Innovation, technology, and their social and environmental impacts'

The idea of technological innovation as the driver for wealth, well-being, and progress as well as the solution for social challenges has prevailed within the last decades in both business and politics. At the same time, we are currently witnessing rising inequalities in terms of access to technologies; we are confronted with a growing polarization between and within societies across the globe; and we are experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. To shed a light on the interconnectedness of technological innovations and their social as well as environmental implications, this course will zoom in on five topical case studies: Autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, brain-computer-interfaces, drones, and (anti?)social networks.

Rooted in the interdisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), this course will enable its participants to understand the complex interlockings between technological innovations, societal developments, and environmental effects. By bringing together concepts, methods, and insights from STS with topical examples, this course aims to sensitize its participants for the diverse challenges that future global decision makers need to consider beyond questions of established management practices. To do so, this course will provide necessary topical inputs, examine various perspectives on current global challenges, and foster discussion among the participants.

September 2019 - Today
Cooperative State University of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart

Lecturer for 'Technology Assessment'

This lecture focuses on the topic and method of "technology assessment". Based on specific case studies I want to enable students to think about the implications of new technologies for societies.

July 2018 - July 2021
Cooperative State University of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart

Lecturer for 'Society and Information Technology'

This lecture deals with the intersection of society and information technology. Based on the Actor-Network-Theory and the idea of Co-Production students learn about the challenges that are topical in this area (ethical, social and political questions). Different foci topics are set every semester: Big Data, Algorithms, Self-Driving Cars and Technological Impact Assessment.
